It seems that 3D Systems has acquired the 3D printer maker botObjects and plans to use that company’s technology for multi-color 3D printing by combining 5 different colored thermoplastic materials. The first full-color 3D printer by 3D Systems that uses FFF/FDM technology to extrude thermoplastic material will be the CubePro C and the device will apparently be on display on CES 2015. botObjects pioneered the first 3D desktop printer using PlasticJet Printing (PJP) that offers true full-color 3D printing, significantly expanding the palette of possibilities for what designers, artists and engineers create, from prototypes to products. botObjects also invented a proprietary 5-color CMYKW cartridge system, capable of mixing primary printing colors on the fly to generate vibrant color combinations and gradient transitions.

The botObjects ProDesk3D will be folded into 3DS’s new CubePro C printer family and deliver a true full-color experience at a price of $4990 USD, so actually not way too affordable for home users. The new CubePro C should be capable of printing down to 25-microns layers at deposition speeds of up to 175 millimeters per second using durable PLA and ABS print materials with PVA support material. Until the company expands its manufacturing capacity, the CubePro C will be available in a limited release, with plans to expand distribution later in 2015 and currently there is no yet official release date set, but that will most likely follow soon.

It seems that while the basic specifications will remain the same, the CubePro C 3D printer will come with a lower build volume as compared to what the original design from botObjects promised. Also there is currently no price information about the special color cartridges with filament that the device uses coming form 3D Systems, but a full 6 cartridges with the colors plus a sixth PVA support one was priced at $135.95 USD, so we can expect a similar price. The CubePro C is definitely going to be an interesting option for people that want to have more affordable multi-color 3D printing using device that relies on common thermoplastic materials such as PLA and ABS.

It seems that the 3Doodler pens 3d are getting a new improved 2.0 version very soon, the project is already on Kickstarter and the goal of $30000 USD has been reached in less than an hour. The 3D printing pen that started this new segment will be slimmer, lighter, quieter and even easier to use according to the information and it should be available as early as February for the first 100 early bird backers at just $50 USD. The other backers should get their 3Doodler 2.0 3D printing pens in April/May time-frame and we suppose that about that time the product will be also available on the official website for sale. Currently checking the official website we can see that the older version of 3Doodler is out of stock, though you can still find the 3D printing pen being sold on various other websites. According to the official information it seems that the original 3Doodler has already sold over 130000 units, so you can really call the product a very successful one thanks to being very affordable when you compare the price to an affordable 3D printer. The standard price of the new 3Doodler 2.0 pen without additional accessories should be $99 USD, so it is getting better and still remains affordable.

The new 3Doodler 2.0 is 75% smaller than the original, making it similar in size to a marker pen, it is also lighter at just 50 grams or half the weight of the original and should come with a stronger and better looking anodized aluminum case instead of the plastic one used by the original. These things should make the new 3Doodler 2.0 3D printing pen easier and more convenient to use as well as more attractive looking. But it is not just the look and feel that has been improved, the functionality also promises nice improvements such as lower power usage, optimized and quieter cooling, better speed and performance and more. We are already looking forward to seeing the final 3Doodler 2.0 and trying it out, even though we are not that big fans of 3D printing pens, the new version 2.0 does make us want to try one. Recently had the chance to try out one of the most affordable and quite popular full-color 3D scanners, the 3D Systems Sense 3D scanner. We have purchased the Sense 3D scanner to check it out because of its very attractive price compared to almost all alternatives and the fact that the device is handheld and offers the ability to scan larger objects. While the results we got in terms of the 3D mesh detail were pretty good, the texture information was pretty low resolution and not very usable, so we started looking for a better alternative that is not much more expensive. Our search have lead us to discover another handheld full-color 3D scanner – the Fuel3D, a project that has apparently been started on Kickstarter back in 2013 and now they are apparently shipping the device to backers. Fuel3D is also taking orders from new customers with a price of the device set at $1490 USD and with a shipping date set for March 2015.

The technology used in the Fuel3D scanner system is different than what most other 3D scanners use, the Fuel3D relies on two cameras and three flashes to capture the depth and detail information. Judging from the sample scans from the Fuel3D 3D scanner it does manage to provide maybe slightly better detail level on the 3D mesh scan and a significantly better texture information than what we’ve managed to get with our 3D Systems Sense 3D scanner. Do note that the Sense 3D scanner is available for just $399 USD, so it is significantly more affordable as compared to the Fuel3D, even though the level of quality you get is not as good as with the more expensive unit. On the other hand the Fuel3D probably does provide a lower quality when compared to a professional 3D scanner that may cost thousands of dollars. So it all goes down to what you need to do with the 3D scanner and if you only need the 3D surface information or also the texture on top of it, if you can do only with the first and you don’t need too detailed scans then the Sense 3D scanner probably should do. If you also need a more detailed texture information for use along with the 3D geometry of the scanned object than the Fuel3D is probably going to be the better choice. Looking over the specifications of the Fuel3D scanner we should also note that it is apparently not designed to scan larger objects, so you are limited to more like the ability to scan a human head and not a the whole body – something that you should be able to do with the Sense 3D scanner for example. Even though both devices are handheld, it seems that the technology used in the Fuel3D scanner is able to produce better results, but is more limited in the size of the things you can scan and also it might take more time to scan a more complex object. Still the Fuel3D 3D scanner does seem to be an interesting and affordable 3D scanner system in the form of a full-color device that is handheld and is priced so that it can be interesting for the non-professional users.
